It is wise to park your car in the centre of the village, Piazza Europa or at the Parish church forecourt; then follow the signs indicating the Castello di Supramonte, walk close to the hill along the road of the Rocchetta, taking to the quarter of “Prato Nuovo”. Leaving the asphalted road behind, one can move through the nice cobbled lane reaching the top of the hill (10-15 min.). Many components make this place fascinating, almost magic: the tower, the little church, the ruins of the castle and, not least, the stunning sight from the little churchyard or the extreme north hill top. Just at the top, one can see on the right a huge tower (XI-XII century), about 20 metres tall with a square base and no battlements. It underwent a number of reworking interventions in the past and is equipped with a balcony. (XIX century). The ruins of the Castle of Supramonte are about 100 metres far away. The building is entirely made of river stones, bound by mortar courses. It had at least three keeps, the oldest of which is located close to the church of Santa Maria. Its square base with a wall thickness of 140 cm is still visible. A round water tank with a diameter of 340 cm opens east of the tower. Because of its geographical location, this fortress enjoyed a great territorial importance; today, however, only its strong fortress walls can be recognised ,though in an advanced stage of ruin. These walls were made of herringbone pebble-stones and signed by some embrasures for the archibugi ( old firearms). Today they are mostly collapsed. The bibliographic findings didn’t have better luck either: a few papers were actually discovered and there are many uncertainties about their authenticity. According to historians, the origin of the castle of Supramonte dates back to the XIII century, while other witnesses refer to testamentary papers, which are thought to be fake; therefore, the problem of dating is still open, even though a careful observation of ruins would seem to anticipate the origin itself to the previous century regardless of the later wall extensions. For sure, Prato Sesia belonged to the Lordship of the Romagnano family, with the consequent concurrence of events. The passages vary: from Arduino to Ottone, to the families of Barbavara, Visconti, and Tornelli and eventually to Cardinal Mercurio Gattinara. The little church of the “Castle”, rebuilt in Baroque style, is dedicated to the Virgin’s Nativity; it hosts a XVth century fresco depicting Saint Sebastian and a Saint Bishop and shows a simple hall with cross-vaulted pronaos ( inner area of the portico of a Greek or Roman temple, leading to the cella). The state of preservation is good. It should be reminded that in the nineteenth century, Anselmo Prato, magistrate of Romagnano Sesia, set a historical novel in this castle. The title is “Beatrice di Supramonte” and it recalls the style of the Manzoni’s “Pomessi Sposi”.
