Driving the state road linking Novara and Mortara, in lower Lomellina, you can see the castle in the centre of the village of Nibbiola. If you enter the village, the imposing building, standing on a hillock surrounded with lush vegetation, leaps out at your eyes. Entirely made in bricks, the fortress could be attributed to around the XV century. The castle parts, which have better preserved their ancient characteristics, are the west one, which shows still today both corner towers, whose battlements, however, were modified, and the central tower, built in defence of the entrance. Both eastern towers, slenderer and thinner, have kept the original structure, particularly the one standing south-east, which shows part of saw-tooth decoration. Today, very little of the original tower and wall openings is left, as they have been mostly replaced by windows from the XVII century. The moat with the original bridge driver is still today visible on the west side. The drawbridge is particularly valuable with its wooden punches, the chains, the iron hinges and the supporting stone brackets. An elegant wrought iron balcony is just above the drawbridge. A private devotional oratory, dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola (it cannot be visited) stands inside the castle. A little court-yard with small porch supported by two granite columns is visible in the east side, where a vast garden extends rich in azaleas and rhododendron. The building underwent a deep change during the 18th century and since then it has been transformed into private residence.
