The Saint Stephen’s oratory is located in the countryside, along the road leading to Vignarello. The building has a single hall with apse. Its original structure was modified in the 18th century with a remarkable wall elevation and later with the rebuilding of the Neo-Romanesque façade. The ancient Romanesque oratory, supposed to date back to the XI century, still shows the apse and the inferior part of the side walls. The large and quite low shape of the apse is curious and unusual; it is parted by five large pilasters connected together by couple hanging archlets. The place is already mentioned (with the definition of “prato” (“meadow”) in 1006 and in 1121 a “Fondazione di Santo Stefano” (“St Stephen’s Foundation”), depending on the homonymous Abbey of Vercelli, is noted down. The building was preserved in excellent conditions until the XV century; in fact the residential monks wanted its interior to be decorated with valuable wall-paintings. Unfortunately, today only a representation of the Virgin Mary with Child between Saint John the Baptist and Saint Stephen is visible. Moreover notice the presence of a wall-painting depicting a nice Madonna with Child on the Throne at the little chapel of the cemetery of Vignarello (2 km).
