The castle of Vicolungo stands at the centre of the residential area close to the Saint George’s Parish Church. It develops along a north-south axis with the annexed guard corps and both courts. It is quite difficult to give the oldest nucleus a certain dating, just as knowing the original shape of the entire complex, as there aren’t papers prior to the XV century. It can be supposed, after a careful examination, that the walling system, made in herringbone river pebbles, of which some traces can be found in the “Castle Block”, dates back to the centuries XI-XIV. The fortification is built up by Antonio Rebozio – faithful supporter of Sforza family in the war for conquering the Duchy of Milan – between 1453 and 1464, in order to guarantee a greater defence to his residence, Rebozio family were formerly “milites” vassals of the counts of Biandrate and thanks to this title they lived in the buildings of the “castrum” for immemorial time. The text of the paper (1480) Rabozio wrote to the Milanese dukes before dying to guarantee his daughters the possession of fortification and fief, is very interesting; through this paper we know the history of the fortress: “Antonio Rabozio, son of the late Bertolino, inhabitant of the land of Vicolungo, located in the County of Biandrate, wanted a fortress to be built in the same place of Vicolungo, surrounded with moats with ravelins, bridges and axes, even though all these have a cramped shape in order to diminish the expenses…” Bernardina and Maria, Rabozio’s daughters, split the fortification in 1491, which passed to Gritta family in 1539. Other papers let us know that there were very hearty relationships between the Novarese family, owner of the complex, and the community, as much that the heads of Vicolungo families (24 people) were assembled in a meeting, together with Gritta brothers and the Podestà of Biandrate. In substance, the men of Vicolungo expressed the desire to get a square in front of the Saint George’s Parish Church, in such a way to have the direct access to the cult place without passing through the castle. The Gritta Family agreed to give up their kitchen-garden in favour of the Commune and to build a new open door, where the wall-painting of Saint George and the Dragoon can be admired. Under the Gritta family, part of the fortalice was restored and three halls and a little loggia (painted between 1624 and 1627) were added. After the disappearance of the noble family, because of a strange hereditament, the property was claimed by the Caccia family of Mandello, and then passed definitively to the Ospedale della Carità od Novara in 1687. Since then the residence had been transformed into farm and it has been keeping these characteristics still today. Despite some demolitions happened in half 19th century, some parts of the fortress are still well kept: the square keep at the south-east corner: there are traces of the (walled up) postern with the bridge crossing the Molinara irrigation ditch, and yet the pointed windows for each keep storey.
