The Saint Peter’s church at the cemetery is the ancient parish church of Casalvolone. It has been already mentioned as “Plebem de Casali” in Pope Innocenzo II’s bull of June 26, 1133 to the Bishop of Novara Litifredo. It was consecrated by Bishop Riccardo and declared in the witnesses in 1157 as “Ecclesia de Casali”, but for sure its origins are earlier. The building, widely restored in 1976, is today a precious evidence of the Romanesque art in Lower Novarese. It has the nave and two aisles with as many apses, perfectly subdivided into four spans, on their turn covered with an elevated almost dome-shaped cross vault. After a Verzone’s assumption, the church was originally covered with wooden roof trusses having rectangular separation pilasters. Later It was reworked forming the bundle pilasters, the present-day vaults and counterforts and the reconstruction of part of the side-walls. The belfry (its dating is uncertain, but is older than the church) has a square plan, with five levels of windows and frames. A series of hanging archlets are shown on a couple of inner walls. The outer walls, mostly irregular, are made of river pebbles and backed clay and some parts of then show a herringbone structure. Several wall-paintings of the XV and XVI century, some of them are dated (1424-1495) show off in the interior. The representation of Christ in Mandorla with the symbology of the Evangelists and a row of Saints and prophets dominates in the apse zone. The inscription appearing on the wall near the apse is interesting: “Mafeus de rigonibus de vale Taegis armiger fecit fieri hoc opus 1478 de merce apriliis”. The side walls, too, are richly painted in fresco and depict figures of Saints and fragments of wall decoration (datable around the XII century, similar to the one of the Baptistery of Novara). On the front we can find a wall-painting representing the Virgin Mary on the Throne between Saints Peter and Paul and Saints Joseph and John at their sides. The Ossuary close to the right side of the front, instead, dates back to the first decades of the XVII century. Its interior is decorated and closed by an elegant grating in wrought iron. The wall-painting removed from the apsidiole situated north of the ancient Saint Peter’s parish church has been temporarily placed in the Parish church of the village.
