The ancient complex, known as "Cantina dei Santi", is in the centre of the village next to the parish church of San Silvano, in Via Abbadia. It is mentioned as “Cantina dei Santi” for the first time in 1777, in a paper of the “Beni dell’Abbazia di San Silvano di Romagnano” (Goods of the Abbey of San Silvano of Romagnano”); however, it is well-known that its origins are much more distant. But how much? For the time being it is difficult to establish, poor historical and archival papers can’t help this research. We assuredly know that it is the sole and authentic witness of the centuries-old Benedictine Abbey of San Silvano, a monastic centre of great importance for the region of Novara. It is formed by a large double porch hallway with a table ceiling supported by beams and, another 18th-century ribbed-vault porch. From the porch you can access to two large rooms, one having vault walls being richly decorated with interesting frescoes referable to the second half of the XV century. Its original use is unknown, too: a refectory, chapel, charter house, sepulchral cell or home of the Abbot. The wrong use of the building, over the centuries caused such degradation to be utilized as a rural warehouse. Only recently the “historical building” has regained a great dignity thanks to the economic effort of the Municipal administration, Pro Loco and Romagnano citizens. The frescoes that decorate the “Cantina dei Santi" have a great importance since they represent a cycle of iconography quite unusual for the area. In origin, as many as twenty-eight painted panels followed each other; today only a few are still readable and depict scenes of the Bible, particularly episodes of King David’s life from the 1st and 2nd book of Samuel. The author of the frescoes is still uncertain. Critics ascribe them to Bartulonus of Novara, a painter, who worked in this territory in the second half of the 15th century.
