Parrocchiale dello Spirito Santo
“This Baroque-style church, decorated with stuccos and gilded works, captures the attention of visitors”. These are the words that the parish priest used to describe the amazement of tourists visiting the new parish church, inaugurated in 1698 by bishop Giovan Battista Visconti (written on a slab stone). The large room is decorated with stuccos, gildings, bas reliefs and canvases, all perfectly concatenated, a harmonious combination of volumes and proportions. The parish church of Maggiora is one of the most important Baroque-style edifices of the area. A perfect fusion of architecture, sculpture, decoration and painting. The niches between the chapels hold colourful clay sculptures representing the Apostles, at the sides of the major altar, the painting attributed to Lorenzo Peracino the eldest, depicting Virgin Mary and Jesus. The presbytery holds the Holy Spirit Descent, depicted by Tarquinio Grassi (1656-1730), and the Sant’ Agapito Martyrdom canvas, attributed to Cuzzio from Oleggio. The major altar belongs to the XVIII century and it was transferred from the church Carmine di Novara with the suppresion of the Filippini. Among its chapels, rich in priceless marbles and stuccos, it is worth mentioning San Giuseppe Chapel (on its sides notice the two gilded caryatids made of stucco), where we find the canvas attributed to Pier Franceso Gianoli (1624-1692), depicting the Rest During the escape from Egipt. The painting is very suggestive: the beautiful still life in the basket, the cheerful Child handing a fruit to San Giuseppe, the unusual figure of the Virgin, her head covered with a striped cloth. Inside the sacristy you can admire another Gianoli creation: the altarpiece depicting San Sebastiano, San Fabiano and Santa Irene. Gianoli was a prolific and very active artist in this area, his creations are also kept in Sant’ Antonio da Padova Church on the opposite side, the Santa Marta chapel, completed in 1683, where a canvas attributed to Cuzzio is kept, depicting Santa Marta appearing in front of a confraternity’s member.
